Thursday, June 10th, 2027: Young 5-5 for Marlins
5 hits in a game has always been a magic number in baseball. Only a handful of players will do that. Get 5 hits in a game and you get your moment of glory...your 5 minutes of fame...you get your name in the record book.
In the Marlins 18-7 win over Cincinnati, Matt Young was red-hot today, scorching them for hit after hit at Pro Player Stadium.
"To hit the ball consistently well, you have to relax. I was relaxed for the first four hits, but I must admit, I got too much adrenaline going when I realized that this was a special once-in-a-lifetime chance for the record book. On the last hit, I was ready to swing at anything close, I was that excited. That's why my third base coach called time and told me, 'Calm down and wait for a good pitch.' That got me back on track and I nailed the first one in the strike zone."
On his record-setting day Young delivered 5 hits in 5 at-bats, a day he will not soon forget.
M. Young singled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, hit a two-run double in the 5th, doubled in the 7th, walked in the 7th and singled in the 9th.
This season Young is swinging the bat at a .289 rate with 22 hits in 76 at-bats. To date he has hit 3 home runs, scored 13 runs and driven in 12.
Wednesday, May 26th, 2027: Atlanta's Potticary Goes Ballistic with 5 Hits
If just anyone could go out and hit a baseball, big dollar contracts wouldn't exist. But they can't, so the good hitters get the big bucks. Ewan Potticary showed how it's done as he went 5 for 6 against the Cincinnati Reds and helped the Atlanta Braves beat them 17-7.
The manager for the Reds told the SION sportswriters, "We made some bad pitches and he took advantage of it. That's the game of baseball. Don't make mistakes and you win a lot more ballgames."
If Potticary keeps hitting like this, he could be headed for a big pay raise.
E. Potticary struck out in the 2nd, hit an RBI single in the 4th, singled in the 5th, doubled in the 7th, singled in the 8th and singled in the 9th.
In 2027 Potticary is batting .320 with 3 home runs.
Friday, May 14th, 2027: Townsend Goes Cycling
It was a special day for Mike Townsend at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Not only did Orioles beat the Cincinnati Reds 17-1, but the Baltimore right fielder hit for the cycle, too.
The 29-year-old Townsend racked up 1 single, 1 double, 1 triple and 1 home run to get his name mentioned in the record book. For the game he was 4-5 with 1 RBI and 4 runs scored.
In the words of Cincinnati manager, "He hit everything we threw. There was just no getting him out today."
Speaking to the press after the game, he said, "First pitch fastballs, that's what I was looking for today...I got some good looks."
M. Townsend doubled in the 2nd, was hit by a pitch in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off K. Uehara in the 4th, tripled in the 6th, singled in the 7th and grounded out in the 8th.
Looking at his 2027 season stats, Townsend has compiled a .237 batting average in 19 games with a .318 on-base percentage, while hitting 1 home run and driving in 4 runs.
